Happy Chanukah to my beautiful Jewish family

…Trafalgar Square.

Inscription: ‘Chanukah is the Jewish Festival of Lights. It celebrates the victory of the militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over enemy forces that threatened the Holy Land some 2,100 years ago.

After the victory, the Jews rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem and the Menorah (candelabra) that had been desecrated and extinguished by the enemy was rekindled. On their return, the Jewish people found only a single jar of uncontaminated oil - normally enough to burn for just one day. This miraculously burned for eight days until pure oil could be made ready. Since then, the eight-day Chanukah festival has been celebrated by Jewish communities worldwide.

The Menorah is a vivid symbol of spirit over matter and light over darkness. It is a beacon against religious bigotry and persecution and an inspiration for those that cherish freedom.

The Mayor of London together with Chabad House of Hendon and the London Jewish Forum wish all Londoners a very Happy Chanukah.

Mendy Levy designed the Trafalgar Square Menorah.’

This country has the second largest Jewish population in Europe and the fifth largest in the world, according to Wikipedia
