Loch Voil and the Braes of Balquhidder

Today's the day ........................ for Rob Roy country

This is the view from Creag an Tuirc, a high bluff overlooking the village of Balquhidder.

This was the gathering place of the Clan MacLaren and there is still a memorial cairn on the summit bearing witness to that fact.  The view is quite stunning from here - 22kms of the Balquhidder glen and a series of overlapping mountain slopes dropping down to the long slit of Loch Voil and beyond it, Loch Doine.

Away beyond Loch Doine lies the house of Inverlochlarig, where Rob Roy Macgregor - the area's most notable son - died.  And a little bit closer, between the two lochs, the house of Monachyle Tuarach, where Rob and his wife Mary Macgregor of Comar first settled into married life.

There's a bit of controversy as to whether Rob Roy was a hero or a villain in the history of Scotland.  I'm most definitely of the hero persuasion .................
