inspired by stones
We went to Levens this morning - a village set on a hill not far away from Kendal. Pam had invited us to see her garden, which she has designed and developed over the last five years. She had consructed it on the banks of an old quarry which had in the past provided much of the building material for the walls and houses in Levens.
Not surprisingly, her garden was full of stones - small, flat creamy limestone, just right for making walls. She used them to build a series of retaining walls to prevent the added topsoil from being washed away to the bottom of the garden.
She employed Adam, a professional gardener who has a penchant for building stone walls. She pointed out this ammonite fossil that he had carefully placed in a prominent position so it could be enjoyed by all who passed by.
We saw him later in a nearby garden repairing an old wall. It was hard to see how he could create a thing of beauty out of such a random heap of stones. However, he certainly did.
