An eight mile walk starting and finishing in Dunwich, on the Suffolk coast. Medieval Dunwich was a city and major seaport until storms and coastal erosion destroyed its harbour in 1286.  That erosion continues: about a metre a year is consumed by the sea.

The walk took us past Greyfriars Friary then across Dunwich Heath to the Coastguard Cottages, where the National Trust should spend some money on a coat of paint. The halfway point entailed some important research followed by a walk through Dunwich Forest past some handsome houses.

The last two miles were the hardest, across Westwood Marshes and then along the shingle beach with views of Sizewell Power Station against the setting sun.
