The Fisherman

It was just wonderful to visit Elliot Heads this afternoon just as the sun was about to set.  I was astonished to see so much activity with people fishing, swimming, paddling and picnicking.

This young fisherman very happily allowed me to take his photograph and we had a bit of a chat.  I commented on his fishing tackle, particularly the very innovate fishing rod holder that was firmly set into the sand.  He very proudly said - "My Grandad made that" and then after a short pause, "he died four weeks ago".  It was a very poignant moment and I had to fight back my emotion.  All I could say was, "well I think it's fantastic and I think it's great that you're using his tackle.  I'm sure he's up there looking down at you at the moment".  We shared a few fishing stories and I was happy to tell him that when I was little I used to own a surf rod and my Dad (who was a great fisherman) had shown his three children the way to fish off the beach.

I hope I see him again one day, because I'm going to print off a couple of images and carry them with me.  Every time I go to Elliot Heads I'll look for him.

About half an hour later I saw him leaving his fishing spot and then about five minutes later he was running 100 mph back along the beach.  He returned with his beloved rod holder that his Grandad had made.  He looked across at me with a big grin, held it high and said, "I left it behind".
I'm sure Grandad sent him a message!!

I have added some additional images from Elliot Heads Here!!
