The new white background of Blip is causing quite the angst - and I rather agree it's not nice or easy to look at. If you use Firefox, a helpful add-on might be Color that Site

I've just found and installed it. It can analyse a site, and identify the background colours; you can then change the white background to grey (or even black, if you fancy - maybe whatever you fancy) without affecting the foreground colours or photographs.
