Aberthaw Power Station. Vale of Glamorgan.
Built in 1966 over the site of a golf course, this power station was at the time, the most advanced in the world. It was due to be closed in 2005 but the installation of new technology to cut Sulphur Dioxide emissions by 90% (to meet new European environmental regulations which came in to place in 2008) saved it. According to Wikipedia, the plant consumes between 5,000 and 6,000 tonnes of coal every day and contributes 6-7 GWHours a year to the national grid. It was considered for conversion to nuclear power, but this option has been turned down due to the fact that it is in a conservation area and too close to the city of Cardiff..
