Stopping Roman progress
This is Limestone Corner on the Hadrian's Wall Trail, looking west. The stone is definitely not limestone but the hard igneous intrusion that makes the famous whin sill. When the Romans were building Hadrian's Wall they arrived here and could not move all these boulders out of the way. The course of Hadrian's Wall had to deviate around them!
It's a bit of a puzzle because they did clear the Vallum which runs parallel to this, the ditch. The stone in the middle of the image is about 4 feet tall. On the top grooves made to try to attach the lifting equipment are visible although not in this image.
There is a trig point very near and wonderful views to the south. I'm taking a group walking here tomorrow and just did a short walk today to check part of the route to the east.
Otherwise it's been preps for the Challenge on Saturday, an eye test (an expensive business getting new specs) and a nap before one episode of the Bridge from Saturday (brilliant stuff).
