The Mercat Cross, Peebles OLD CAROL 5

Around the time that this Cross was fashioned in the 14th Century,  the tradition of the Coventry Mystery Plays was emerging.   There are references to these plays - originally performed by the city's guilds - dating back to 1392.    The Carol "Lullay, Lullay, is the second of three included in the Pageant of the Shearmen and the Tailors. 

Lullay, lullay, thou little tiny child
