Strone

I was over in Port Glasgow for a funeral this morning and on the way back the wet low cloud which has deposited rain on us for more than 36 hours seemed to rise a little.

From the ferry we could see Strone which is just what the name says it is - a nose or "sron" in Gaelic which juts out between two sea lochs - the Holy Loch on the left and Loch Long on the right.     In this context "long" is also a Gaelic word meaning "ship" .    Sron is the root of quite  a few anglicised place names in Scotland including Stranraer and Troon, where I was brought up.

Despite this momentary break the rain and greyness soon came down again and have lasted through until now - which somehow seems appropriate given the awful news again  from Glasgow.
