Jenners, Edinburgh

Caught the bus into the city late this morning. It was still raining and cold. Spent quite a time in looking around the German Christmas Market which looked very similar to the market we'd seen at Leeds Castle a couple of days earlier. Same sorts of stuff and food for sale.

We tried the gluwin and a French hotdog concoction, but not as the same time. That would have been too much then mooched along the stalls to the far end by Scott's Monument where we entered that labyrinth known as Jenners.

Not the place to go with a wheelchair and I think a place about which you need an intimate and long standing geographical knowledge. There was a time I felt that I was not going to get out this side of Christmas. But the Christmas decorations and tree were interesting.

We made it to the cafe which was busy with lots of people serving but nothing getting done as the queue seemed to fossilise in front of us. In the end after eventually getting out soups we bypassed the till, ate (or drank) the soup before it lost the last few degrees of heat and went to pay for it later when the queue had evaporated. The till assistant didn't seem in the least bit suprised about what we'd done.

After fighting our way of the store we walked up to and along George Street. passed the Dome and other very nice Christmas lights to be picked up at Hannover Street, collecting fish and chips from the Pentland Fry on the Lannark Road. Quickly scoffing them it was back in the car and down to the cinema to watch Paddington - which was an experience. I'm probably the world's worst movie watcher but this was quite watchable in an entertaining, unthreatening way.

So endeth our first day in Edinburgh.
