Even on concrete

Basking in the early morning light on a concrete fence post are some colourful lichens. These are fascinating organisms, being a symbiosis between a fungus and a green alga or a cyanobacterium. Since they are sensitive to environmental pollution they are often an indicator of clean air.

Also makes a nice variation for this week's series 'things on fence posts' with the concrete post and brighter colours.

My inspiration for this series came from a pic I took on an early morning walk with Maeve the Deerhound at Dunadd last week. A veritable forest of lichens and mosses on a fence post!
