George Wyllie has died, aged 90.
When I was attending Gourock High School as a pupil in the 70s and 80s, my journey to and from my place of education took me past a very interesting house. The front garden of this modest bungalow was jam packed with metal sculptures and zany installations. The owner was George Wyllie, a man who's work I was to become a big fan of.
a great Scottish artist
He's probably best known for the straw locomotive that he hung from the Finnieston crane in Glasgow - his comment on the decline of heavy industry on the Clyde. You may also have seen his running clock outside Glasgow's Buchanan St bus station.
Reading his obituary today I was amazed to read that he was amongst the soldiers who were in Hiroshima two weeks after the bomb. His experience there influenced the rest of his life.
Pictured here is a print of his that I own, complete with a personal dedication from George to my son, and the great man's signature.
