Life Savors

Day is Done....

Laying wreaths on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery in December started in 1992 when a Maine wreath company had a surplus and sent them to Arlington for placement in one of the older sections that had very few visitors each year.  This tribute has grown each year and now includes the entire cemetery and US military cemeteries across the country and around the world. This year, on December 13, thousands of volunteers placed 230,000 wreaths here at Arlington.  It is quite a sight to see.

This image was taken near where my parents are buried in Section 60, just as the sun was getting low in the sky.  There are many tourists in town over the holidays so the cemetery was rather busy, but no section was as busy or remains as heart-wrenching as Section 60.

As we drove around the looking for other shots, I couldn’t help but notice that the cemetery has grown so much over the years and there are sections now that are very close to the Pentagon. Surely it is a very good thing that those in the Pentagon can see this reminder of such sacrifice every day.
