Little Rays of Sunshine

I took myself off on a drive today and out from Willow Tree were fields of sunflowers with sunflowers to every horizon.  Can anyone explain why they had their heads turned against the sun here?  I thought they would be following the sun as it set.  No matter, the road wound around the fields so I could shoot in either direction.
