On the banks of Allan Water
We’ve had a day when the fog never lifted and the ground remained covered in a hoar frost.
This bleak image of the Allan Water in Bridge of Allan sums up the atmosphere here in central Scotland today.
The river achieved fame because of a song written by an Englishman Mathew Lewis (1775-1818). It became very popular and features in Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel “Far From the Madding Crowd”
Here is Adelina Patti singing it.
