My favourite small town.

On our shopping trip this morning I found this poster which I had never seen before.

When we first went to Kendal 40 or 50 years ago it was horrendous. The A6, the main road from London to Glasgow was the town's main shopping street. It had bumper to bumper heavy lorries crawling through all day and crossing from one shop to another was hazardous.
With the M6, the western bypass and pedestrianisation it is now an enjoyable place to visit.
It is about 800 years since it was granted a market. The long Main Street has hardly any side streets but has a large number of "yards" which go either up the steep western side or down to the River Kent.
The best book about Kendal is the collection of pen and ink drawings by A. Wainwright of Lake District walking guide fame.
