The Crossing
The spectacular event of Elephants swimming is a breathtaking & a very rare incident that occurs worldwide. In Sri Lanka it can be seen in only a handful of places & "Senanayaka Samudraya" (a huge water tank) in Ampara is one of them. I was fortunate enough to witness this up close while in a boat.
The best time to witness "The Crossing" would be during the months of July & August when the water levels are low & the elephants go in search of food by swimming from one small island to the other in the water tank.
Elephants are very vulnerable & helpless when they're in the water. Therefore it's up to us, the visitors to not to get too close to them since they might get panicked & drown themselves.
This type of nature should only be observed from a distance.
