Back to the Future
What better way to start the new year than in a cemetery? January is traditionally a month when we review the past year(s) and look forward to the future, a time when we are might wonder how many years we have left on earth and what we will do with them. I don't mean this in any morbid sense. I like visiting cemeteries and appreciating the lives of those who lived before us. It can be an inspiring, rather than a depressing, experience.
In this view of Calton Hill cemetery, where I walked this morning to blow away the Hogmanay cobwebs, there are three interesting monuments. From left to right:
The obelisk which commemorates Thomas Muir and other political reformers who campaigned for universal suffrage.
The American Civil War Monument with a statue of Abraham Lincoln and a freed slave.
The mausoleum of Scotland's most famous philosopher, David Hume.
And as if this were not enough inspiration for one day, I took Luke to see "The Imitation Game." It was my third time, and another chance to look at Kiera Knightley's beautiful hand-knitted cardigans.
