Can you see her?

A dark, grim New Year's Day is the perfect time for a ghost story, so it's off to the cinema to see sequel The Woman in Black: Angel of Death.

Brrrr ... and that's not the cold talking. The action moves from Victorian times to the Second World War, with Eelmarsh House repurposed as a haven for evacuees. But someone malevolent lurks in the shadows ...

As sequels go, this ticks all the boxes, being more than simply derivative of the first film - it helps that original novel author Susan Hill wrote the new story - with committed performances, sharp direction, good camerawork, art direction, music ... all the right ingredients for an unsettling 90 minutes.

Lead actor Phoebe Fox - no relation - is especially good, managing to seem courageous and curious when she goes down darkened corridors in the dead of night rather than Too Stupid To Live. She has a Hayley Atwell/Emily Blunt quality and I look forward to seeing more of her.
