Banded dotterel
Went right out onto the sand spit today in search of the elusive godwits and found this wee banded dotterel guarding a nest or chicks I couldn't see. It did chirrup and run along to distract me. Very hard to see amongst the driftwood and the stones. Described in the bird book as common but not here. I did see another pair and a little flea sized ball of fluff running up the beach but too quick for me to blip.
I found when I downloaded the photos that I did have a pair of godwits which I took to be variable oyster catchers from a distance.
There were 25 white faced herons feeding as the tide dropped back.
