Made in the GDR

We took down the Christmas decorations today and consigned the tree to the back garden where it will doubtless be sawn up and used as firewood.

One of the sets of lights on the tree was this one. Bought in 1987 by my late father-in-law in Finland and made in the good old GDR or the DDR as it was sometimes known. It doesn't exist any more of course but the lights are still going strong.

So much for the empires of man which are supposed to last for ever and a day. Outlived by a set of fairy lights. How's that for an empire? Someone should show this photo to that clown Jamneh in the Gambia. He seems to have got it into his head that his rule will last for a billion years. Clown!
