The Islanders

One of my favourite rooms in the current exhibition at the Modern Art Gallery in Edinburgh is the Charles Avery pictures.

Born in Oban in 1973 and self taught, he created a number of works relating to a fictional island and his pen and ink sketches of Island life are amazing.

Everytime I go back I see something new.  The pickled eggs, the triangluar butterflies, the funny hats, or No 3's favourite - the man in this picture selling 'photos of nudey women '.

We both agreed the pictures could be disturbing, but the craft is amazing.  Each person in his huge pictures has their own unique face and personality.

No 3 had been sketching something similar this morning - which gave me the idea to take her hear to see these.

At Gallery One until 25th January - if you are passing.
