Trees tease - Help, please!

Can anyone identify these two hugely tall trees from their winter shape, and their spiky, twisty branches? Their barks are fairly smooth and pale grey. I thought I'd photographed them in leaf one spring or summer, but I can't find any such images on my pooter. They are really imposing at any time of year. I'd love to know what variety they are.
