Baeza Geezer
Had a great day here on our mini-break to Beazer.
Stayed in a lovely hotel 'Puerta de la luna' and had loads of fun being tourists today as we explored the sights to be seen,
Stumbled across this amazing shop where we bought some lovely green ceramic plates/bowls and met this man.....a true leg end!
"Standing near the ornate fountain in the cobbled square, we almost expected a cloaked and daggered lord to swagger through the archway of the Puerta de Jaén. Nearby, Baeza?s oldest church, 13th-century Santa Cruz, spans Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance influences.
After an hour or so, one Renaissance palace starts to look very much like another. We decide to detour up a side street and into a small pottery shop, whose elderly owner comes to the door to greet us. We don?t know it, but we?re about to meet one of Andalucia?s most talented eccentrics.
Until he was 52 years old, Señor Diego Lozano Jiménez lived an unassuming life, first in Madrid, then as a solid citizen of Baeza. Miraculously ? as he tells it ? without any training or previous skill, he suddenly started carving in marble. Since then, he has created several incredibly detailed replica models of Baeza?s finest historic buildings. They are on show, together with a coy request to donate a few coins, so each display can remain brightly lit in its glass case."
