Broken bridge

Meet Mighty Mouse, Skoff's adorable puppy.

So my apartment building burned down last night. Luckily, Laura & I weren't home when it happened. We would've had a hard time getting down the stairs (since the fire started in the basement) and, even worse, we might've been sleeping when it broke out. I can't imagine waking up to smoke and firemen running through my apartment. I had no idea about this until today.

I spent last night at my mom's, and when I got home this morning, the first thing I noticed was two bums hanging out in the parking lot behind the building. Then I saw all the boarded-up windows. When I smelled smoke, it hit me.

I shot out of my truck and ran around to the front and found a couple of my neighbors standing outside. They told me that there was a 2-alarm fire last night right after midnight. One of them was actually inside the building with her dog when it happened. The firemen went up and saved them. I freaked out because my cats were still in the building.

Luckily, some firemen showed up and they took me and my neighbors up to the roof to rescue my cats and my neighbor's phone and wallet. The fireman had to jump across the gap between the roof and the window. A few moments later, he came back with Kikeli, who was alive and well! He said that he found her in the back hallway, which I later found out was completely charred and destroyed. He said that the "big fat cat" (Einstein) wouldn't let anyone touch him, but he assured me that he was fine.

So Kikeli had to ride with me, Skoff, and Mighty Mouse around the city all day. (I was filming him leave free pieces at random locations.)

Here's Kikeli wondering what the hell is going on with her life right now.

Skoff was really patient and helpful. He didn't mind having Kikeli in his truck at all. Later, when the firemen let everyone in the building, he helped me get Einstein, who was in another unit.

Tomorrow morning, I have to move all of my stuff out of the apartment.

Nate is letting me sleep on his couch tonight. Thanks, Nate!

The cats reek of smoke, but they're fine. That's all that matters.

Oh, and some bums broke into the boarded-up building sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning and stole cash from my room. They also stole my neighbor's laptop. Thankfully, my laptop was hidden under my bed, so they didn't take it. Whew.
