Snyder's Landing

If you don't know about the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, you need to.
It is a wonderful place for a bike ride or hike. The canal was originally built to haul freight by barge from the deep wilderness of Cumberland Maryland to the new nation's capitol in Washington DC. It was built by hand by Irish immigrant labor and for it's time was an engineering marvel. The canal was conceived before the advent of the railroads, and by the time of completion it was already obsolete.

Fortunately it is now part of the National Park system and as such it is managed for you and me to enjoy on a Columbus Day holiday.

Snyder's landing is a boat landing along the Potomac River which is paralleled by the canal.
