Chaffinch

Today's bird is a male chaffinch. It is only in the last couple of years that they seem to have got the hang of how to use feeders - apparently they are quite slow learners. The pigeons, on the other hand, are (unfortunately) quite clever at landing or hovering around the feeders, and also often just shake the feeder about to dislodge seed, and then settle on the ground to eat it - often working at this in a group. Some of the male blackbirds do something similar, though as they are quite quarrelsome they are usually just dislodging food for their own use, or for themselves and their mate/potential mate.

This shot was taken at a feeder much closer to the house than the one used by the nuthatches and woodpeckers, neither of which are willing to use today's location.
