What lies beneath
The attempt to fix the sunken bit in the hall floor wasn't all that successful - and lost us a few of the original Victorian tiles in the process.
The tiler - who started out optimistic but then couldn't find replacements - said the floors were originally laid over wet sand; as this would dry and contract, the tiles would be sucked into place.
Over years of central heating and various patchings-up with cement, the floor was in a pretty poor state when you looked closely.
