Put the Needle on It

On this day in 1949 in the UK, RCA introduced the first vinyl record (45 rpm) and Columbia released the first vinyl record at 33.3 rpm.

On 10 January 1956, Elvis Presley made his first recordings for RCA Records at The Methodist Television, Radio and TV Studios, 1525 McGavock Street, Nashville. "Heartbreak Hotel" was one of the songs recorded during this session, which was released as a single just 17 days later.

On this day in 1964, The Rolling Stones recorded 'Not Fade Away' at Regent Sound Studios in London.

I had fun today playing some records on my old Systemdek IIX record player. You forget just how good vinyl sounds. I still have most of my vinyl collection in boxes around the house.

Interesting that in 2014 more than one million vinyl records were sold in the UK - the first time the milestone has been achieved since 1996. Pink Floyd's latest release The Endless River became the fastest-selling vinyl release since 1997.

The figures mark a largely unexpected resurgence in an industry now considered to be dominated by digital.
