Walker Pass; the best place to be today

We lounged at this end of Walker Tarn for half an hour or so telling yarns, laughing and eating

It's one of my favourite places (but I do say that about a lot of places I tramp and climb ;-)

We also discussed our camp site options. Just right of centre you'll notice a tussock area beside the tarn. Four solo tents would disappear nicely there. But if the nor'wester wind, already showing spirit, really came up, we'd be exposed.

We also wondered about those towering rock buttresses and the earthquakes this week. But mostly it was the potential to be flattened overnight that drove our decision to continue on a bit further west.

There we camped a tad below 1000m beside the East Otahake River, huge amphitheaters all around, It was warm, hot even until we lost the sun. Then the temperature plummeted.

A superb day. Sun, breeze, great company, awesome scenery, plenty of uphill and high stuff and feet that did as they should :-)

We didn't camp right on the Main Divide, but we were close. When the nor'westerly isn't funneling through we know exactly where we'll camp.
