Love Locks

This set of love locks (is that what they are called or did I make that up? ) is slowly growing on the newRijnhaven Brug (bridge) foot bridge in Rotterdam.

I am never sure how this works - do you just lock it on in a romantic moment and forget it forever, or do you each get a key so that if your relationship fails you can go and unlock it later  

or maybe I am over analysing
