Re yesterday: My meteorologist friend gave me a very simple and practical definition. Fog (or mist depending on the visibility) is a cloud that has a contact with land or sea, regardless of the altitude.

While daughter A was having her soccer game I was hoping to get down to the Wreck Beach but couldn't find a trail through the steep section, just fences. I was hopefully thinking January drizzle might be the time of the year when you won't be reported hanging out at the clothing optional beach with a big zoom lens.
