The allotment - January 2015
Two good sessions at the allotment recently. Friday saw us do much tidying up and continuing with the clearance of the nettle ridden bed to the left hand side of this shot. Today saw us complete the bed alongside the fence and plant a couple of blackberries. This is what the plot looked like in February last year.
We also removed a large black plastic sheet that had been covering some unused ground for about a year. The sheet can be seen drying in the background. Grass had grown like a mat over the sheeting but the soil underneath was in good order and looks fine after digging as you can see.
We relayed the sheeting after completing the digging to prevent further weed growth over the coming months. A large pile of horse dung which has been covered by an old carpet for about a year has turned into some excellent well rotted manure. One of the next tasks is to spread this over the potato patch ready for planting the spuds in in a couple of months time.
We still needed a couple more pallets to complete the row of compost bins in the background. We spotted one outside a house while out walking later in the afternoon. I knocked at the door and asked if we could take it. Permission was given so we carried the pallet home between us. Must have looked a strange sight.
