Twelve Apostles
Australia 2013 Backblip #15
First up we drove to Mait's Rest, a short walk through Rainforest just of the Great Ocean Road. We then drove on to Cape Otway Lighthouse, and on the way stopped off to look at some wild koalas sat in trees. Some of them were very obliging and posed for us, others just sat up in the tree, asleep.
Cape Otway Lighthouse was next. There was all sorts to see here including a World War II radar station, and we were also able to climb to the top of the lighthouse. It was windy at the top, but gave us some excellent coast views.
From here we drove further inland to the Otway Fly. This is a raised platform you can walk on that brings you up to the same height as the top of the trees. We had lunch here before venturing out on the walk. They have a tower at one point that takes you up to 47 metres above the forest floor. We didn't spend too long up there as it was moving in the wind. That combined with the really tall trees also moving, didn't make it easy!
From there we drove on to Triplet Falls, just up the road. We were expecting to park reasonably close to the falls, but it turned into a bit of a yomp, both up and down stairs, through the rainforest. We were eventually rewarded with some good views of the falls. On the way back we came across an old steam engine, rusting in the trees. This used to be used to provide power to the logging crews. We could also see holes on some of the tree stumps that had been created when the tree was felled.
Our next drive was our longest of the day, where we travelled through to the 12 Apostles rock formation for sunset. It was quite hazy, but we did get plenty of photos both towards the sun and away from it. This has to be the largest collection of expensive cameras we've seen in one place for a while. I think the winner was the bloke with a full tv style camera on a big tripod. Once done there we drove on a short way to find our lodgings for the night. Today is self catering, but we didn't quite expect to get a full apartment to ourselves - two double bedrooms downstairs and a kitchen/dining area, plus three other single beds upstairs!
We walked into Port Campbell for Dinner, eating outside under the stars.
