BERRIES, MILKWOOD TREE

The milkwood tree grows to a grand old age with spreading branches and has a strange aroma belonging to ancient times.
The most famous tree is known as"The Post Office Tree " and can be seen at Santos Beach Mossel Bay, South Africa.
As early as 1488, navigators landed at Mossel Bay to fill their water barrels with fresh spring water. In 1500 Portuguese navigator,  Pero de Ataide left a letter in a shoe tied to the trunk of a milkwood tree. His letter told of the loss at sea of four ships from the expedition of Bartolomeu Dias. Seven years later this message was discovered by Joao da Nova.
