Black walls of Yorkshire

Around my part of yorkshire the field walls are black as the smoke and smog that used to drift up from the towns around them.
i thought they had been stained by the smog from the towns and this may be in part true as im told it is a chemical reaction with the atmosphere and the sandstone in this area
