I have been living in France for 36 years, I think it's worth talking about where I come from. I was born in Gloucester (which is always a problem with french administration - glou-cesse-terre), but I have never been back there since.

Up to the age of 5, I lived with my Mum & Dad and younger brother Dan in St Briavels, Forest of Dean. Then one day, they saw an ad in the Sunday Times for a house for sale in Brittany, and decided to make the move - this was in April 1979.

So we moved to Avessac, France, and that is where I grew up and went to school. Soon arrived another brother, Tom, and a sister, Flora (she will be 30 next month, I'll have to put myself a reminder for that).

I often wonder what I would have become if we had not moved to France. Maybe I would have been in EMF (they were from the Forest of Dean too), or more probably I would have ended up in the computer industry like most of my generation.

I kept my British nationality, to avoid having to lose a year doing the french military service. But now, I feel more French than British, and am considering taking the French nationality.

I still support the England football and rugby teams more than their French counterparts though, that's an inheritance from my Dad (the bearded guy on the photo).
