Turnstone at Whitley Bay
I had to visit Whitley Bay today, but I knew I'd have a bit of spare time so I took my camera along for the ride too. There was some lovely light on the rockpools at St Mary's Island and I was going to blip a photo of them, and then this bird appeared and "asked" to be blipped instead!
Looking at our bird book we think it must be a Turnstone, in its winter plumage. There were 2 or 3 of them around on the beach and the headland. Seemingly they breed in Scandinavia in the summer but can be seen in the UK at this time of year.
(If anyone knows that we're wrong, please tell me!)
