Full Moon at Split Rock Lighthouse
The rising of the January full moon behind Split Rock Lighthouse brings out the photographers. Tonight was no exception despite the -10 F temperature . There was a bit of wind, but not too bad. With the sun just setting below the horizon behind us we still have a bit of light to illuminate the building and rock.
The Split Rock Lighthouse over Lake Superior is the most photographed subject in the state of Minnesota. It is a majestic site standing on top of a 130-foot (40 m) cliff where the beam can be seen for 20 miles out to "sea". The station closed in 1969 and has been restored as a National Historical Monument offering tours to the public. The light is turned on occasionally, which, of course, brings out the photographers as well!
