Herring Baby in the Cold
Today was bitingly cold in the Hague, ca. 3˚C (36˚F) with light wind. We went to the Bredius Museum and the Prince William V Gallery. The Bredius Museum is in Bredius's house--he was director of the Mauritshuis and a collector of everything Dutch, with much of it displayed beautifully in the building. The Gallery is a historical building with paintings from the Mauritshuis's original collection displayed in traditional style, covering the walls. Both sites are close to the Mauritshuis itself, and the collections are fascinating.
Afterwards we passed a small booth in the open, selling snacks of all kinds, including fish--especially herring and mackerel (as you might guess). At least a half-dozen customers were squeezed into a space half the size of our modest hotel room, sheltered only by plastic drapes. I took one shot of this youngster from outside, through the plastic; his father had just finished and might have been putting on his gloves.
