Ice Shelf

Cayuga Lake rarely freezes over completely because it is so deep and stores a lot of heat.  The shallow water at the north and south ends of the lake do freeze out a few miles by mid February and the resulting ice shelves are usually strong enough to support ice fishermen and wind surfers.
