Highlands to Honolulu

Social media shy husband thinks this is a weird and creepy picture... I admit to messing around with Snapseed to make it like this, but I found it quite an interesting process.
I'm looking through old photographs in an attempt to find some of my best friend down the decades ahead of a 50th birthday do next weekend.
I had never seen this before. My late dad has written on the back that it's Margaret Stewart from Honolulu and that it was taken in 1953. He's also added that she is the sister of Ann Patience, his mother.
I know very little about my dad's family as he was an only child and both his parents died before I was old enough to have a proper relationship with them.
Now I can't stop thinking about why Great Aunt Margaret went from the Highlands of Scotland as a young woman (probably in the 1920s) to Hawaii. And did she know the Obamas? OK, unlikely but allow my fertile imagination to run riot.
