Life from city to village

There shall be time no longer...

After a long campaign, the money to restore Oakwood Clock has been raised, and the work begun. The clock was made by Potts and Sons, to go in the Leeds Kirkgate Market, in 1904. But it only stayed for 8 years, when it had to be removed to allow for a new entrance to the market to be built. It was moved to Oakwood, to the area where the tram stopped, and a shelter built below with seats for the passengers to wait in the dry. The tramway closed in the 1960s, and the clock had been untouched since 1907.

The work to remove the clock for restoration began last week, with the removal of the shelter and seats. Then the clock face and mechanism was removed this week - leaving this empty shell, with the rather incongruous light pulls hanging down. Apparently the rest will be removed on Monday 26th.
