Monte Albán

The large archaeological site of Monte Albán is located high on one of the mountains that surround the city of  Oaxaca. This was my fourth visit to the site but the first time we hired a guide. As always, the guide greatly enriches the experience with his/her knowledge of the history, environment, and previous inhabitants. 
We learned that when the Zapotecs began to build their city, they flattened the entire top of the mountain and built terraces all down the sides for the purpose of growing their food. 
My sister was awed by the architecture and and sweeping views of the entire Oaxaca valley.
