Deserted medieval village

Wharram Percy is one of East Yorkshire's totally deserted villages. It is about a mile from the main road in a deep valley and only accessible on foot.

In the middle ages it was a thriving village with two streets, it then suffered the same fate as many subsistence farming communities  when landlords discovered they could make more money running sheep on grassland than collecting rent.

Extensive archeological work was carried out in the 1950's and the footings of some of the buildings are visible. Some restoration work was carried out on the church, this being the only section with a roof, which is not original.

Now it is a popular walk and forms part of  the Wolds Way. Today it was
extremely muddy and very busy, both dogs went in the lake and transferred large amounts of mud and water to the inside of my car!
