A mystery crop

Driving home I stopped at a service station on the A1 for a rest and refreshments. A quick walk found this unusual crop in the field, not one I recognise at all. It was 4 feet tall ( shows my age) and very slender. There were no grains to see. It was dry and pale in colour which was unusual for this time of year.
