Ruins

The massacre of the population and subsequent razing of the village on July 10th 1944 led General De Gaulle to declare Oradour-sur-Glane be left and maintained as it was, as a memorial to all civilian victims of Gestapo atrocities. It is a sombre, quiet place where visitors walk thoughtfully and respectfully with the ghosts of over 600 men, women and children.
