Falling at the first
The first step in our plans to build a second floor extension was to check the foundations of the existing extension. The builder we bought the house from assured us that they were double-depth, so that we could build up if we wanted to.
Not only are the foundations not strong enough to support a second floor, they aren't even strong enough to support the existing extension, as they aren't very deep and the concrete had been poured onto a load of broken bricks instead of having a solid base.
I always said I didn't trust that man... too late now though after all these years, as we have no way of proving what he told us. It looks as though we will have to have it all underpinned, as it seems that we're lucky not to have had major problems before now.
And yes, I know the patio needs weeding!
