Community musical event
The Strathcarron Singers invited the Glasgow YMCA Wind Orchestra to join them in their annual concert in aid of the hospice tonight.
Both the choir and the band are the initiative of individuals. Molly Parsons, MBE, first matron of Strathcarron Hospice fulfilled a lifelong ambition to form a choir in 2004.
Four turned up for the first rehearsal. Today there are over 50 members and it has raised more than £60,000 for the hospice.
While in Glasgow Jim Fraser, a local businessman and keen musician, approached the local YMCA in 1982 about renting a room in order to start a Wind Band. That band has gone from strength to strength though the title YMCA Wind Orchestra is slightly misleading, and the butt of endless jokes, since it is composed of men and women of all ages.
They played to a full and very appreciative audience tonight in the Albert Hall, Stirling.
